Shelf filters apply a constant gain change to all frequencies above or below the specified frequency. Pass filters have increasing gain change (cut) the farther you move away from the specified frequency. Mixes too boomy and muddy? Cut those low frequencies, son! There’s very little (in fact, almost nothing) of use below 50k, so get rid of those rumbling frequencies and see what it does for your mix.
